Sample: Report of the Affairs of the Estate (Wash. statutory style) for the Estate of Eleanor M. Doe

Everything about this estate is made up except the format. Every figure below is produced by the ledger from ordinary entries (a house sold at a gain, dividends, the funeral bill, two distributions), and it balances to the penny. Yours would look like this, with your numbers.

The cash on hand at the opening, plus any money found after the inventory, plus the receipts, less the disbursements. A line with no figure in either money column is property handed over in kind, which is not money paid out.

Property Received Since the Inventory

Property that has come into the hands of the personal representative since the inventory (RCW 11.44.025). Money found later is in the cash schedule above, on its own line, so nothing is listed twice.

Total received since the inventory$2,150.00

Property Collected and Distributed

Grouped in the classes the inventory used (RCW 11.44.015). Anything sold or handed over during administration has left these lists. Bank accounts and money are in the cash schedule above rather than here, so the two totals add up.

Property handed over in kind is not money paid out, so it carries no figure in the Receipts or Disbursements columns. The item itself has left the property remaining undisposed of.

Claims Filed, Allowed or Rejected

The estate record carries no claim register, so this block is for the preparer to fill. Which bar date applies depends on the notice each creditor got (RCW 11.40.051). A creditor mailed actual notice is barred at the later of thirty days after that mailing and four months after first publication. A creditor who only got the published notice is barred four months after first publication. A reasonably ascertainable creditor who was never mailed notice has twenty-four months from the date of death, and so does every creditor if notice was never published.

Fees, Declaration of Completion of Probate

RCW 11.68.110(1)(g)

Fees paid or to be paidAmount
(i) Personal representative or representatives$9,400.00
(ii) Lawyer or lawyers$ ________
(iii) Appraiser or appraisers$ ________
(iv) Accountant or accountants$ ________

The personal representative believes the fees to be reasonable. The declaration itself states that the personal representative does not intend to obtain court approval of the amount of the fees or to submit an estate accounting to the court for approval, so this report is for the beneficiaries and the estate’s own records rather than a filing that accompanies the declaration.

Notes

  • Washington publishes no form for either the inventory or this report. The statutes are the whole specification.
  • A personal representative with nonintervention powers has no duty to follow the procedures of RCW 11.76.010 through 11.76.080 (RCW 11.68.090(2)(b)). That is why most Washington estates file no accounting with the court. What can still be required is the report under RCW 11.68.065, on a beneficiary’s petition.
  • Compensation of the personal representative is what the court deems just and reasonable (RCW 11.48.210). Washington sets no percentage schedule, so no commission is computed here.
  • The whole of the community property is administered in the estate, and one half is confirmed to the surviving spouse or surviving state registered domestic partner (RCW 11.02.070). No value in this report is halved.
