Sample: Account (Miss. Code Ann. § 91-7-277/-291 style) for the Estate of Eleanor M. Doe

Everything about this estate is made up except the format. Every figure below is produced by the ledger from ordinary entries (a house sold at a gain, dividends, the funeral bill, two distributions), and it balances to the penny. Yours would look like this, with your numbers.

Estate of Eleanor M. Doe
IN THE CHANCERY COURT OF COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI
IN THE MATTER OF THE ESTATE OF Eleanor M. Doe, DeceasedCAUSE NO.

FINAL ACCOUNT

Miss. Code Ann. § 91-7-291
A final account is sworn and carries a distinct statement of all the balances of the annual accounts and a statement of the kind and condition of all assets in hand.
Since 2019, neither account is required where the testator’s will waives it. In an intestate estate the chancellor may waive it on the administrator’s petition. Either way, the chancellor may still order the account later, on the petition of a beneficiary or other interested party, if filing it is found necessary or advisable (2019 H.B. 1375; §§ 91-7-93, 91-7-277, 91-7-291).

Account of the personal representative for the period commencing on November 14, 2025 and ending on August 31, 2026.

Balance of Money on Hand

BALANCE OF MONEY ON HAND: $387,135.87

The money on hand at the opening of this period, plus money found after the inventory, plus the receipts, less the disbursements.

The Balances of the Annual Accounts

A distinct statement of all the balances of the annual accounts already filed, either as debits or credits (§ 91-7-291). This record carries no history of those accounts, so the preparer brings each annual account’s balance forward here, and with it any amount received that no previous annual account contained, which the same section asks for by name.

The Kind and Condition of All Assets in Hand

The property still held other than money, real property included (§ 91-7-291). The money the estate holds is the balance above rather than a line here, because an account carries the value the inventory gave it and does not move as money is paid out, so listing it twice would show the same money at two different figures. The two together are the assets in hand. The condition column is left for the preparer; this record does not carry it.

DescriptionKindConditionCarried Value
Brokerage account, VanguardBrokerage account$186,320.44
Household furnishings and personal effectsPersonal property$6,500.00
Coin collection found in decedent's safe deposit boxPersonal property$2,150.00
Total, Assets in Hand$194,970.44

The values above are the carried figures. Anything sold or handed over during this period has left this list.

Property Received Since the Inventory

Property other than money received since the inventory. Money found later is in the receipts section above, on its own line, so nothing is listed twice.

Coin collection found in decedent's safe deposit box$2,150.00
Total, Property Received Since the Inventory$2,150.00

Distributions in Kind

A handover in kind is not money paid out, which is why it carries no figure in the Disbursements above.

The Parties in Interest

Miss. Code Ann. § 91-7-293 files this statement with the final account, under oath: the names of the heirs, devisees and legatees so far as known, saying particularly which of them are under twenty-one, of unsound mind, or convict of felony, with each one’s place of residence and, for a nonresident, a post office address or an averment that diligent inquiry was made without avail, and the names and residences of the guardians of any who have one.

The account and this statement then stay on file for inspection, and summons issues or publication is made for all parties interested, as in other suits in the chancery court, to appear not less than thirty days from service of the summons or the completion of the publication and show cause why the account should not be allowed and approved (§ 91-7-295).

Compensation

Compensation recorded for the executor or administrator: $9,400.00

The court allows such sum as it deems proper, considering the value and worth of the estate and the degree of difficulty of the duties discharged, plus necessary expenses including a reasonable attorney’s fee. Mississippi sets no rate, range or cap, so nothing is computed here (§ 91-7-299).

Oath

The undersigned, personal representative of this estate, states under oath that the foregoing account is true and correct to the best of Daniel R. Doe’s knowledge and belief.
